Susan Salvo is the author of massage therapy textbooks used in massage schools across the nation. As a guest speaker for The Woodlands School of Massage Therapy, and personal friend and colleague, Mrs. Salvo lectures and inspires our students on a myriad of massage-related topics.

I am a practicing massage therapist with over 30 years of experience. I love to research information and write about it. I have written two best-selling textbooks used around the globe - Massage Therapy: Principles and Practice and Mosby’s Guide to Pathology for Massage Therapists. I have also contributed works to other publications including Teaching Massage, Modalities for Massage and Bodywork, Muscle and Bone Palpation Manual, and Massage and Manual Therapies. I also like to teach. I teach regularly at the Louisiana Institute of Massage Therapy and travel the country conducting workshops for practicing therapists. I also post instructional videos on YouTube. My primary teaching goals are to help therapists increase their quality of client care and expand their therapeutic treatment options. Students have given me the nickname the “Yoda of Massage” because of my broad knowledge and teaching expertise. But it's more than that... I strive to create an educational environment of discovery and engagement. I love learning and find myself frequently in the classroom as a student. I have an associate degree in history, a bachelors in education, and a masters in educational leadership and instructional technology. I am currently working on a doctorate in education. Conducting research is fun! I am also an expert witness in legal cases that involve massage therapists. I enjoyed being on the task force for the Massage Therapy Body of Knowledge. In fact, it was one of my peak experiences. Achieving Board Certification was another. And I got to be a featured expert with David Lauterstein and Benny Vaughn in the documentary, History of Massage Therapy in the United States. That was a blast! I have been a member of the AMTA since 1983 and help charter the Louisiana Chapter of the AMTA in 1986. In 2014, I was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Educational Excellence by the AMTA. I have served on the advisory board for the American Pregnancy Massage Association and currently serve on the review committee for the Massage Therapy Foundation. I am a member of the Society for Oncology Massage and the Alliance for Massage Education. I married my childhood friend, Michael Breaux. I have five children - Jason, Chelsea, Christopher, Connor, and Camille. My stepchildren are Jessica, Jennifer, Justin, Juliet, and Jason. I love playing cards and chess with our children. I also get lots of requests for my deviled eggs and French silk pie.
